The Unfolding of a Rose - A Struggle with Breast Cancer

A Heart-Warming Story of Walking with Breast cancer

Using Christian Faith in Breast Cancer Awareness

What is The Unfolding of a Rose?

The Unfolding of a Rose is biographical in nature, but relates strongly to religion.  It is a story of a mother and daughter who strove to meet the ultimate challenge--breast cancer--and how their faith sustained them.  On April 20, 2005, the daughter dies, and her mother is left asking God why.  She discovers the answer to the question in a melody of day-to-day demonstrations.  Stretch your faith, discover who you are, and soar to heights unknown in The Unfolding of a Rose.

The author is a student of Christian Science and maintains it as a way of life.  She is class-taught, a former First reader of a branch church and a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston.

The Unfolding of a Rose
Meta was a beautiful, precocious and curious little girl.

Growing up to be an intelligent and outgoing young woman, Meta graduated with honors and married the man of her dreams.  She had two children and became an entrepreneur, developing a successful business.  Life was wonderful and proud mom, Mamie, couldn't have been more pleased for her daughter.

Life took a sudden and unexpected turn when Meta learned she had breast cancer.   Meta, with her mother's help, began a search for the why of what happened.  The two women's bond became even stronger as they discovered the teachings of Christian Science.
Through their study and practice, they gained a greater understanding of the true meaning of life-the essence and spiritual part of a person-and how that part is what lives on forever.  As Mamie recounts, "I see her (Meta) as planted by divine mind, nurtured by spirit, and yielding the fruits of love."

This is the story of a mother's love.  It is a story of a beautiful, young woman whose physical life was cut short by disease.  It is a story of faith, survival, and a message of hope to anyone who has suffered from the loss of a loved one.   Smith's amazing and beautiful tribute will touch your heart and soul.

Faith or Medicine?

I read an article today  that held up "faith-healers" as people who do not practice what they preach.  It's sole purpose was to list the number of people who placed their faith in God for healing, and either turned to medicine later, or died from a disease.  I am not sure what a faith-healer is.  The article seemed to lean toward anyone who does not use medicine for healing.

As a person who has used my understanding of God to heal numerous diseases for 39 years, I will not say what I will "never" do.  I turn to God for all inharmonies in my life: physical, mental, financial and emotional.  Prayer truly gives us "our daily bread."  Over the years, physicians have been consulted, some have helped and others not.  However, I believe a key ingredient in healing is overcoming fear.  Fear takes away one's ability to reason, seek divine direction and maintain faith and confidence.  Each day, I trust God to direct me in meeting every human need in the best way for me at that moment.  I hold no one up for derision, nor ridicule.  I think most of us do the best we can.

I do feel however, that the person whose website keeps count of the number of faith-healers who have either turned to medicine or died, should keep track of the number of people who die each year from various diseases using medicine in some form.  There are over 100,000 people who die each year in hospitals from just medical mistakes, not including those who are not healed.  That number would be astronomical.

Finally, it is easier to point fingers at someone, than to point the world in the right direction.  Let us work together to conquer sin, sickness and death.

How Do You Build a Strong Faith in God?

You build it day by day, hour by hour, and with one experience after another.  You learn through each human experience that the God whom you cannot see with your eyes or touch with your hands, really does exist.  Sharpen your trust with each thought.  Let the Holy Ghost, the divine Comforter, the Christ guide you.  Don't be afraid to go before the world and practice what you believe, even if you are scorned, ridiculed and berated.  Whom are you trying to please--man or God?

Study the prophets, Jesus' teaching and use each day to apply what you acquire from your study to daily activities and experiences.  Walking in faith is not easy--is humanly unnatural, but divinely natural.  Let your works prove that your guidance comes from God.  It is not what you say, but what you do--your day-to-day demonstrations.  Jesus was the greatest example of this.  When John sent messengers to ask "Are thou he that should come?" Jesus recounted his works, not his words.  He told of the sick who had been healed, the lepers cleansed, and the blind who saw.  This is what we must do--heal the hate, reform the down-trodden, encourage the doubtful, and heal the sick.
